FAQs – Garbage Collection

When is my collection schedule?
Your collection has NOT changed! Please put out your recyclables and PINTO Recycling tote before 7 AM on your collection day.

What happens if there is a holiday on my collection day?
To acknowledge our nation’s holidays and allow our employees time with their families, your garbage and recycling services will be impacted on the following days:
New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day
** Garbage & Recycling services will run one day behind throughout the Holiday week, beginning with the services scheduled for the Holiday. **

What time should I have my garbage out for collection?
Please put out your trash and recyclables before 7 AM on your collection day.

How many bags or containers may I put out on collection days?
You may have up to 10 Bags/containers which should not exceed 60 lbs in weight per bag/container, excluding bulk item. All garbage, refuse and waste material intended for collections shall be placed in material-tight plastic bags or in water tight containers, with a min capacity of (20) gallons and max capacity of (30) gallons. All containers shall be equipped with handles and fitted with a cover.

How many Bulk items may I put out on collection days ?
1 Bulk item per week can be put out on your collection day.

What if I have more then one Bulk item to put out on collection days?
Call Pinto Sanitation 716-775-0123 before putting 2nd bulk item to the curb. Only 1 bulk item to be collected weekly.

What are acceptable Bulk items that can be placed out for collection?
Bulk items shall include , but is not limited to – Furniture, Mattresses, box springs, rolls of carpet properly bundled, Christmas trees, Large appliances, etc.

I’m cleaning up my garage or have a special project, what are the options for getting rid of the extra trash?

Can I throw out construction material/wood?
No construction debris curbside, call Pinto dumpsters for a Grand Island discounted dumpster rental.

Do you take old tires?
YES, 1 tire per week curbside (no rim).

What should I do with yard waste/leaves?
Place yard waste/leaves in secured bags by curb with a maximum capacity of 30 gallons or 60 lbs/bag.

What should I do with trees, branches, twigs?
Please securely tie trees, branches, and twigs in a bundle left curbside (not to exceed 4ft in length.) Anything larger or not bundled will be collected by the Town of Grand Island Highway Department.

How do I dispose of paint?
We Do NOT accept Liquids of any kind during curbside collection. However, you can mix Cat litter with the paint and allow to Dry. For best results use equal amount cat litter with paint.

How do I dispose of chemicals and other hazardous materials?
We Do NOT dispose of Chemicals and Hazardous Materials.

How do I dispose of old electronics?
Every season Pinto will Sponsor a E Waste Collection Drive at the Town Hall of Grand Island. No Charge for Grand Island residents to recycle their old electronics. (With proof of residency) There will be a $50 flat rate fee for CRT (tube-type) TVs and computer monitors.

What can and can’t I recycle
The do’s and don’t are listed on the recycling guidelines page. When in doubt, throw it out.

Is styrofoam recyclable?
No, not in our curbside collection program. Some items like Styrofoam packing peanuts can be reused at local shipping business, but larger block Styrofoam cannot be recycled and must be taken with trash.

Do you recycle motor oil or oil filters?
Pinto does not collect motor oil or oil filters.
Did you know: any service establishment that sells at least 500 gallons per year of new oil and performs vehicle servicing must accept from the public at no charge up to 5 gallons of used oil per person per day. Retailers who don’t service vehicles but sell at least 1,000 gallons per year of new oil must either accept used oil from the public, as service establishments do, or contract to have another service or retail establishment accept it on their behalf

Do you recycle electronics?
Pinto does not collect electronic waste as part of our weekly pick up, but will will sponsor E waste drives throughout the year to collect electronics and TV’s. Stay tuned for information regarding these Events.

Can I bag my recyclables?
No, as they are a contaminate and cause problems for the sorting machinery at the recycle facility.
* This also means you should not be recycling plastic shopping bags! *

Where do I put my recyclables?
In your Pinto provided black recycling Tote.

What happens if someone steals my tote – can I get another one?
If your tote is stolen or gone missing , please call Pinto Sanitation at 716-775-0123. When you call, please reference your name, address and # on the side of the tote (if available).

I’m moving, can/should I take my tote with me?
No, totes belong to Pinto Sanitation. If you are moving, the tote stays with the house.

What if my tote breaks?
